Why do some people have to take their shoes off?
Some shoes have metal inside them, added by the people who made the shoes to make them stronger. Even shoes you might not expect to have metal inside sometimes do.
So if our metal detector detects metal when you walk through and you have no other metal on you, it may be in your shoes!
That’s why sometimes we need people to take off their shoes and walk through in your socks. Just to be sure.
An experiment for home…
Test out all of the shoes in your house for metal inside… just hold a compass (you know, the thing that has a needle pointing to the north) very close to the sole of the shoes. That is, underneath the shoe. If the compass needle turns to point to the shoe you can bet there is metal inside.
