Air Pressure

Your ears are like little balloons!

Doctor Don has a whole story to tell you about how your ears are, and are not, like balloons. The effects that we saw with our balloon can affect us when we fly. As we climb the trapped air expands, and we hear a “pop” sound as the expanding air escapes through our “Eustachian” tubes.

Check out What’s with my ears? in our Aviation Medicine section for more info.

There are other places gases are trapped inside our body, which will expand as the plane climbs.

If we don’t let these gases escape we can be in great discomfort. If we DO let the gases escape then those around us will be in discomfort! Someone will have discomfort… better it be the people around you!

Thanks for joining us for this look at Air Pressure!

Author: Thursten Master

Thursten, or "Thrust" as he prefers to be called, is our resident technical genius. This is not a term used lightly... he really does have a brain the size of a planet and he solves a myriad of tricky problems for us. Thrust is particularly interested in the science of flight and, unlike many large-brain academics, is very good at explaining science in terms that normal people can understand.
